Un peu d'histoire
Les origines du Francophile date back to the California Gold Rush. In 1850, many gold seekers came from all over the world in search of the precious metal. Among them were French people who settled in San Francisco. They opened restaurants, bakeries, and department stores. They planted vineyards in the region, founded theaters, and created newspapers. Le Francophile is part of an unbroken series of French-language newspapers published in San Francisco since 1850. Published under the name Francophile since 1979, this publication has spread far beyond California's borders. Its subscribers include French and other French speakers living in the United States, as well as Francophile Americans, including many teachers and students. In all cases, Francophile serves as their link to France and the French-speaking world.
