Le projet de l&#8217;ing\u00e9nieur Gustave Eiffel, con\u00e7u par Maurice Koechlin et \u00c9mile Nouguier, a \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 parmi 700 concurrents. La soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de Gustave Eiffel fait appel \u00e0 l&#8217;architecte Stephen Sauvestre en 1887 pour r\u00e9aliser le projet. La soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Eiffel \u00e9tait \u00e9galement sp\u00e9cialiste des questions de r\u00e9sistance au vent, ayant particip\u00e9 \u00e0 la conception de la charpente m\u00e9tallique de la statue de la Libert\u00e9 \u00e0 New York et du viaduc de Garabit dans le Cantal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">La tour est en fer forg\u00e9. Il mesure 317 m\u00e8tres de haut, et au moins 18 000 pi\u00e8ces m\u00e9talliques et 2 500 000 rivets ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9s pour sa construction. Selon son cr\u00e9ateur, la peinture est une garantie de pr\u00e9servation d&#8217;une structure m\u00e9tallique. Il faut 25 peintres utilisant 60 tonnes de peinture pendant plus d&#8217;un an pour recouvrir l&#8217;ensemble.
